Al-Shabaab militants ambushed a Somali army base in Hilweyne, Lower Shabelle region Wednesday evening leaving at least five dead.
Sources in the area said the militants stormed the base which is located about 25 kilometres from the capital Mogadishu. The militants set on fire two vehicles before leaving the base.
Somali forces fought back pushing the militants out after fierce clash. There was no immediate comment from the government about the attack. Sources said four civilians and one officer were killed.
The ambush came barely a day after Al-Shabaab attacked SYL hotel in Mogadishu killing 5 people and injuring 11 others. The siege which lasted for about seven hours was ended by Somali Special Forces late into Tuesday night.
